Make your car road trip ready

A single father with two little girls drives this SUV. Oftentimes, there's not enough room for the kids or anything in the back. On any given day you would find crayons, french fries, toys, gym equipment, dry cleaning and a host of miscellaneous items in the SUV.

With the help of Emily Fitzgerald, of Organized Living Solutions, we transformed his vehicle into something that can be used to serve its original purpose, not as a home for trash and unwanted items, but to drive he and the girls with ease. Today, this SUV is organized, which makes life easier for our single dad.

Tips for not trashing the car on a road trip

• Take along a box of baby wipes to clean up messes and spills. Use these on the car and yourself! Hand sanitizer is also a handy item to pack.
• Take advantage of pit stops to refuel the car, use the restroom, AND do a quick once over on the car. Empty the car trashcan(s), pick up things off the floor and put items back where they go.
• Offer incentives to the kids to elicit their help! We all work better when we're working for a reward.
• Start practicing the habit of putting items back in their designated "home" after using them.
• So you can start the next day fresh with a clean car, get every one to pitch in after the day's drive. Make a game of it and see who can clean up their area quickest (obviously those who have been good about minimizing the messes throughout the day will start out ahead). Whoever wins gets to pick (any number of things here - the restaurant, the type of restaurant for dinner, etc.)
